Rep. William Current

"I feel your site is just what we in the Westside needs! You have my support."
Nancy

"We noticed your website and your efforts to bring change to west Gastonia. We are interested in doing a story with a representative from your group."
News14 Carolina

"I have worked on the Westside for a number of years and have been looking for someone like you to help become active in making it a better place to live. I know it can be a wonderful place. There are many great people who live there. I lived on W. Mauney Ave for a number of years and continue to work with the residents by staying active with the Westside Community Watch. Our efforts have made a difference in the community, but the more support we have the more we can accomplish. Please come join our efforts!"
Community Watch Leader

Your article has received a lot of attention and you need to be recognized for writing such a honest article. I don't know if I have met you at one the watches but I would like to meet you to discuss others ideas you may have to help the police department with any quality of life issues that are going on in your neighborhood.

I appreciate your efforts to make people aware of the needs and concerns of West Gastonia and if there is a need to meet with concerned citizens of this area I will be happy to attend.
Dave Kirlin, Councilman Ward 2

I grew up in W. Gastonia...nothing like it used to be..slum lords have taken over!
Ric

It's easy to take some photos and then sit on your ass and bitch about it but who are you and what have you ever actually DONE to make a difference? Have we ever seen your name on a ballot? I doubt it!

Finally someone sticking up for the West Side. Great Job!

Keep me in on the loop and let me know if I can help in Raleigh.
NC Rep. William Current

read your website with interest tonight - thanks for all your hard work and dedication to promoted "our" side of town! As a school board member, I read with interest your section on our schools - as a graduate of Hunter Huss, my heart and my home will always be on this side of town. I would love to visit with you about the issues we face here and throughout the county. Thanks again, for your efforts.

Hi, I love the website and some of the actions being taken by the community. I am not actually from West Gastonia but rather North Gastonia. However, my girlfriend is a teacher at Webb Street School and my concern is how bad the neighborhood is surrounding the school and the amount of break-ins to the school (about one a month it seems). I noticed that on the School section of this site, Webb Street goes unmentioned. It is a shame that the one school in Gaston County dedicated to special students is possibly the poorest. Again, thank you for your contributions and actions.

First I would like to say waht a great job you have done with being fair.  Not many can do that these days.  I wanted to correct something someone wrote.  The G-Town signs were paid for by a federal grant, not tax payer dollars.  Also, I would get up at the next City COuncil meeting and publicly asked to be part of the Westside Community Committee. Loudly. Very Loudly.

I love the website. maybe now someone will finally take notice. we have for many years, tried to get help on the west side but all seemed to fall on deaf ears. the old firestone building is a mess. they need to start by fixing this mess. thank you so much for this website
Kathy

You fit in just perfect in the area. You want to sit back, complain that you don't have enough and let or expect the government to fix everything. The city has been working and making advances. Using technology is great, you can make a web site and you can use a computer, but it is not getting involved personally. Accentuate the postitive, you need the citizens to get involved. Try a neighborhood block party or cookout and talk to the people and let them talk to each other. Get away from the computer and take your neighborhood back.

(Quick note here, we like to recieve the good and the bad.  We respect everyone's opinion.  Why is it though, that everyone that disagrees with us never leave their names?  Also,  this website takes a tremendous amount of time and the participation of several people.  It is paid for with our money as are the photos.  We also have been very involved with door to door campaigns encouraging participation in Community Watch, attending meetings with city officials, participating in programs with the police, and a postcard campaign.  All of this was done after we finish our regular jobs and with our money. Just so you know.)

Interesting website and I'm glad to see others who feel the West side is being short changed.

CONDITIONS AT FIRESTONE MILL ARE A DISGRACE; THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO ALLOW A PROPERTY TO GO IN THE GUTTER THE WAY THIS HAS. WERE IT ON THE EAST SIDE OF TOWN, A REMEDY WOULD HAVE BEEN FOUND.
Richard

I have a property there and try sooo hard to keep in clean and drug and gang free , my tenants also!   The weeded
Lot across the street was a long time ago mowed down so people could not run or hide there…now all grow up again.   Have called about this and seems not a big deal anymore, but they used to care.  The camps made in the woods were once gone now back.  Good People live on Scruggs and also corner of W Airline.  Just recently a stolen car was dumped and the person ran into that wooded area.  Someone needs to look into this and CLEAN IT UP… Thanks

I just read the article in the Gazette about this website and I could not wait to log on. I loved the website. It is a very accurate depiction of the condition on the West End. However, I was a little disappointed with the section on the West End Schools. You pointed out that the only school that scored lower than HHH was Bessemer City High. But you did not mention that some of us unfortunate West Enders are in the Bessemer City Middle and High School District as well as Ed Sadler Elementary. I would love for you to include reviews of these schools on your site. I am very upset each year when I get my Gaston County Tax bill and see how much of my tax dollars go toward education and because the district I am in I am currently paying to send my children to a private school. Again, I love the site. I am glad to see that someone cares about the West End.
Travis and Robbie

I am so glad that someone is showing what is going on in gastonia, please keep me informed. I lived in Bessemer City all my life and have seen what has happened to the western side of gaston county. Good work exposing our lack of concern for all parts of the city and county.
Penny

I thank you for what are you doing and hope that you continue doing it. As discouraging as it may be at times, remember that you are fighting the GOOD fight and a WINNABLE fight.

I love my house and some of my neighbors and really loved it when we bought it, but that love is gone....would love to have it back.
Christie

So glad to see this website!! We need to stick together or this end of town will continue to go "down hill"
Debbie

I just moved down here from Lincolnton 2 years ago and I can see the problems you are talking about, and I agree, very very bad.
Jason

I am very interested in contributing to your cause anyway I can.

The City certainly has dropped the ball, but dont let the County off the hook either. the County Comissioners hold the purse strings for the schools and time and time again have put their interests ahead of our childrens. they too share some of the blame for the deteriorating schools and lack of funding.
Robert

I really appreciate your article. I feel like West Gastonia has been thrown away.
Linda

Junk all over the neighbors yard - at last count 20 ferrell cats - numerouse emails to County Commissioner Rep Joe Carpenter and nothing. I would like to be on an advocacy group to clean up the West End - Enough is Enough!
Matt

very fine job here! Keep up the great work. I do wonder why the city isn't just cleaning up the areas and then billing the property owners?
Yvonne

we need to clean up all areas of west gastonia. The city can do more than what they are doing.
Carolynn

Finally someone else who isn't afraid to speak out for our West Gastonia Residents. I have contacted the Mayor who in turn told me to contact County School Personnel about the old Arlington Jr. Hight school. I did and I was told it was being used for storage and there wasn't money to tear it down and there was a meeting the next week about concerns on it and that he would call me back with results but guess what? I never heard from either of them again.
Sherry

When I got married and decided to have a family of my own I specifically wanted to purchase a home AWAY from the "West Side" for the sake of my children.
Tracy

I think there are alot of us out there that share his same thoughts. It is PITIFULL. I live in West Gastonia and I can say that I am not very proud of the area that I live in.
Pat

First, thank you for your untiring efforts on behalf of West Gastonia. It truly is an area of our city we should address with equity. I have met with Mrs. Craig and volunteered to serve on her reactivated committee for West Gastonia Revitalization. I have also brought to the attention of Rev. Dickie Spargo that "Hope For Gaston" should seriously consider areas of west Gastonia in their future projects. He agrees and I am confident that will take place.

As you said, radical changes are not expected immediately, but please know that there has been discussion and some planning behind the scenes to address some of the concerns you portray. If any property owned by the city is in deplorable shape, in need of repair, clean up and/or improving its' appearance, we should address those properties first. I will personally look into that.
City Councilman,  Howren
